Ksenija Jaroševaitė
Sitting, 2018

Did you ever, as a child, install yourself somewhere high up, like on a tree branch, and dangle your legs as you observed the world? The sculptor Ksenija Jaroševaitė liked to do that, and her childhood memories inspired the sculpture Sitting.

Jaroševaitė’s is watching modestly, even a bit timidly, and without the weight of greater years on her shoulders. At the beginning of her career the artist surprised viewers with female forms that were far from stereotypical ideals of beauty, and her work today is no different. This sitting girl’s body is heavy and awkward. Her build is further emphasised by the large slab of stone from which the sculpture was carved. The hardness of the material and the subject’s fragility are in playful contrast. This contrast is characteristic not only of Jaroševaitė’s human figures, but also . . . her cats. The sculptor has created a representation of that soft-furred creature out of granite – she created a large cat sculpture for a Vilnius square dedicated to the writer Jurga Ivanauskaitė.
