This 3D piece by Vytautas Viržbickas is close to the work of Saladžius not only because the main character in it is another dog. Both works are characterised by tension, feelings of danger and the unknown, as well as a surrealistic logic.
The scene represented here first of all suggests an experiment. The structure made up of two battered cages looks as though it is about to collapse. The confused animal is trying to bite a flea, or perhaps, out of stress, its own behind. Visually the work looks like a sandwich topped with lettuce, or a hotdog. The roasting dog makes us think of the suffering experienced by animals used in laboratory experiments or grown in industrial farms. But this dog – “man’s best friend” – hanging above the cages is also a metaphor for contemporary society. Rapid technological change is turning all of us into lab animals.
